Do you feel ruled by the rule that there is only “one” way to express yourself? Do you feel that when you are being you it bumps up against society’s version of how you “should” be? Are you free to wear the clothes and have the friends that best represent you? Do you question your sexual orientation? Do you ask yourself am I gay, bi, or hetero? Or maybe that’s not the question but identity might be. Is your body developing into something that doesn’t feel like you? Is your body telling the world you are someone that you’re not? Have you thought to yourself, I know I’m supposed to be a girl/boy but I don’t feel that way. You want answers and start searching the internet looking to find them. And what you find is a myriad of choices: bisexual, pangender, bigender, gender bender, transgender, gender queer. And once you find one that at least feels close, who do you want to tell? How do you explain this and to whom do you explain it? Do you say to yourself, I can’t tell my parents they couldn’t possibly understand. And what about my friends? Will they accept me, will they still like me? Do you end up resolving to ignore these feelings and just try harder to fit in and then once again feel like no one knows the real you. No one appreciates who you really are. Do you end up feeling frustrated, angry, lonely, and sad? These thoughts and feelings can be confusing and overwhelming.
